What is a mathematician?

In the preface of the one of the greatest books ever written on expository mathematics, What is Mathematics?, an “inspirational collateral reading” — in words of E. T. Bell, Courant and Robbins mention that a genuine comprehension of mathematics cannot be acquired through “painless entertainment.” One can say that a mathematician is more than someone who has a “comprehension of mathematics”. So, (s)he must be someone who takes pleasure in pain; thus a mathematician is a masochist.

Am I a masochist?

  1. I would say, a matematician looks like a masochist from the regular person’s (non-mathematician’s) point of view..

Not all is pain for matematician what is pain for non-matematician!
